For the first time, paper began to be used for sanitary purposes in China. The earliest mention of this refers to 589 AD [1] And by 1391, 720 thousand sheets of toilet paper (2x3 feet) were already supplied annually to the imperial court, as well as 15,000 sheets of special (3 square inches) thick, soft and fragrant for the emperor's family.

In 1857, the New York businessman Joseph Gayetti produced toilet paper cut into neat squares and packed in bundles.

Roll toilet paper was invented by the German entrepreneur Hans Klenk in 1928. In each roll, there were exactly one thousand sheets separated from each other by perforations.

Today, toilet paper is made from special paper for sanitary purposes, the raw material for which is waste paper (“gray” paper) or cellulose (“white” paper). 

Types of paper

Toilet paper can be single-ply, double-ply and multi-ply (usually 3, less often 4 to 6 layers). The mass of a square meter of one layer of paper varies, usually, from 15 (for single-layer) to 35 (for multi-layer) grams. The weight of a standard roll is in the range from 60 to 150 grams.
